Why get involved in Neighbourhood Watch?
Criminal or suspicious activity can be reported and monitored by members, assisting in response by the Lethbridge Police Service. Watch members receive instruction on home security, Operation Identification. Members also have the opportunity to to participate in special presentations such as Lady Beware, put on by the Lethbridge Police Service. Members are kept advised of suspicious or criminal activity in their area through The City Police Communicator an automated dialer and messaging system. Some insurance companies have discounted home insurance by up to 5% to Watch Members.
THE PROGRAM NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH is a program aimed at reducing crime in the community. It involves getting to know one's neighbours and utilizing the concept of NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH. - that is, good neighbors working together, alert to the potential of crime and willing to look out for one another's interests.
- Neighbourhood Watch provides you with a means to assist the police in preventing crime.
- Neighbours working together through NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH can combat crime in their area the most effective way - before it starts.
- NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH provides a means of reducing the opportunity for crime to occur, through the active participation of citizens in crime prevention.
Citizens are taught how to make their homes less inviting as targets for thieves; how to participate in Operation Identification, making their personal property less desirable to burglars; and how to be alert to suspicious activity in their neighbourhoods. Very few people are in a position to protect their homes and property all the time. Vacation, business and shopping trips or even an evening out will leave homes unattended and vulnerable to theft.
The NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH program will provide a sense of security for individuals or families who leave their homes for any length of time. "The program will also help to co-ordinate the efforts of the police service and the community in tracking down criminals" Did You Know? More than 570 homes in the City of Lethbridge were broken into in 1997? Break-ins can happen anytime but most occur during the day? Crimes such as purse snatchings, vandalism, car prowlings, house break-ins and sexual assaults are on the rise? Costs are minimal to join.
